Welcome to Bluebird Society For The Disabled in Hove!

Bluebird for the Disabled was established in 1963 due to the foresight of the late Ronnie Ablett MBE and serves the Hove and Portslade Community. He felt that there was a need for those people who were disabled to be able to meet together in a safe environment in a social way. There were clubs that provided members a lunch and some board games and Bingo to play before being taken home again for a small fee. We have suspended these clubs at the moment for lack of volunteers and cost. The Charity is run with help of volunteers and relies heavily on fundraising to continue its excellent work.

2013 was a special year for Bluebird as it was its 50th Anniversary and celebratory events were arranged and enjoyed by all who came. It was a pleasure to have  Ronnie Ablett’s son and his wife present who said how he was pleased to see the Society that his father had started was still very active.

Residents of Hove and Portslade who are mobility impaired or need more help can use the wheelchair accessible vehicles that are available to take people to doctor, hospital or dentist appointments for a moderate charge. We receive no funding from local or national authorities.
Donations are gratefully received for the shop to be sold to help pay for fuel and the upkeep of our wheelchair accessible vehicles.

Bluebird runs a Charity Shop at 176 Portland Road, Hove BN3 5QN and sells clothes, bric-a-brac, CDs, DVDs, records and other useful items.
The shop opening times are Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday, Thursday, Friday  9am to 1pm . Saturday opening is subject to volunteers availability of 9am to 1pm.  These times are subject to alteration without prior notice as the shop is entirely staffed by volunteers.
